Indonesia Day at HSE School of Asian Studies

On December 10, 2015 the seminar dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia and the 65th anniversary of Russian-Indonesian diplomatic relations was held at HSE.

The event was organised by HSE School of Asian Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus and the Association of Indonesian students in Russia.

Marina Batalina, Head of the International Cooperation Office, Olga Volosyuk, Professor at the School of Asian Studies, Academic Supervisor of the Master’s Programme in Socioeconomic and Political Development of Modern Asia, Resiyaman Oratmangun, President of the Association of Indonesian students at HSE, delivered welcoming speeches at the event. Alexandra Sizova, Associate Professor at the School of Asian Studies, moderated the seminar.

Djauhari Oratmangun, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Indonesia to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus delivered an honorary lecture at the seminar.

The lecture by Djauhari Oratmangun was dedicated to the development of cooperation between Russia and Indonesia and to the results achieved over the years of this cooperation, and challenges that it faces in the beginning of the XXI century.

In his speech, Mr. Oratmangun also raised the issues of political and economic development of Russia and Indonesia in a comparative perspective, he also assessed the situation and prospects of these countries in the contemporary global and regional geopolitical architecture.

In addition, he also analyzed the achievements and challenges of the activity of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the mechanisms of cooperation of ASEAN with the countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Djauhari Oratmangun shared his viewpoint on the political and strategic and trade and economic cooperation between ASEAN and the Russian Federation in the XXI century.

The lecture aroused great interest of the audience, Djauhari Oratmangun received a lot of questions. The participants asked questions about the image of Russia in Indonesia, about research and academic exchange between Russia and Indonesia, and about the features of the country’s internal and foreign policy.

In particular, the participants discussed Indonesia's position on the conflicts in the South China Sea, ‘bloc’ diplomacy, the cooperation with BRICS, the challenges of regional and global security, and on many other issues. The session ended with an exciting quiz hosted by Djauhari Oratmangun. The cultural programme, prepared by the Association of Indonesian students in Russia is also worth mentioning. The workshop started with a national dance. At the end of the event exchange students from Indonesia sang a touching song ‘My Indonesia’ in Russian and Indonesian languages.
